b'Session HighlightsCriminal JusticeWestern Region Fairfield Inn & Suites, Cumberland | July 13-14, 2023 The Class of 2023s visit to Western Maryland began with a stop at Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI). The group learned about the evolution of this nonprofit, which oversees the worlds only mountaintop whitewater course and has guided more than 100,000 people down its mountaintop river, and ASCIs role in Western Marylands outdoor economy. The class then visited the Performing Arts Center at the nearby Garrett College, learned about the five founding partners, and toured the impressive facility. Then it was back on the bus for a windshield tour of Deep Creek Lake and a stop at the always-popular Lakeside Creamery, where they were welcomed by President Bill Meagher 11. Next, the class traveled to the Allegany County Sherriffs Office Detention Center where the stage was set for the sessions Criminal Justice theme. A panel consisting of Captain Danel Lasher, Cumberland Police Department Chief Chuck Tenet, Associate Director of AHEC West Melissa A. Clark, MPA 23, and Certified Peer Recovery Specialists Shalynn Cline and Cody Broadwater. Day two brought the class to Hagerstowns Roxbury Correctional Institute, a medium security prison housing nearly 1,700 men. The class was introduced to the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services by Secretary Carolyn J. Scruggs 19, Division of Corrections. They were joined by Bill Gaertner, Executive Director of Gatekeepers, an organization created to assist previously incarcerated individuals as they re-enter society.
